Background Check Disclosures and Authorization

Please read “Background Check Disclosure”, then print and prepare “Additional Disclosures & Background Check Authorization” form and return it to Pat as soon as possible.
IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is committed first and foremost to keeping youth safe. Part of that commitment includes continually updating our youth protection policies to help ensure we are always on the forefront of youth safety.

As you know, one of the BSA’s many barriers to abuse is a mandatory criminal background check during the adult volunteer application process. The BSA will now also perform periodic rechecks of criminal backgrounds to support the continued safety of youth in our programs.

Please complete the process listed below at your earliest availability to help us continue to provide the safest environment possible for our Scouts and leaders. Please note that these steps must be completed before your 2020 annual registration can be processed.Review the separate disclosure document linked below that is being provided to you separately for your review. It is titled “Background Check Disclosure.”Once you have reviewed that, print the separate document titled “Additional Disclosures & Background Check Authorization.” Review the additional disclosures on that form, then complete and sign the Authorization using an ink/wet signature. Note: A print signature is required for this document. Electronic signatures will not be accepted.Turn in the signed “Additional Disclosures & Background Check Authorization” form promptly to your unit leader or local council service center. If you choose to decline the background check, or if you do not complete the Additional Disclosures & Background Check Authorization form and return it to your unit leader or local council service center, your 2020 annual registration will not be processed.

We are truly grateful for your continued commitment to keeping youth safe and for helping them learn, grow, and thrive through Scouting programs.

GNYC Update

Hello Great Volunteers of GNYC,
As we move into the fall, we are excited for another great year of Scouting with new Scouts, awesome opportunities for families and big new adventures!
Families are attracted to Scouting because of the unique and impactful opportunities that our program offers. They also enjoy a very reasonably priced program, especially when you compare Scouting to other youth activities. National BSA has always been committed to keeping membership fees as low as possible, even while costs continue to grow programs.
Membership fees go directly to National BSA to pay for program curriculum, safety standards, training, Youth Protection resources and criminal background checks, and insurance coverage for official Scouting activities.
As National BSA evaluates growing costs, a team of volunteers and staff from across the country is considering the best way forward that will likely require a national membership fee increase for youth and adult leaders as of January 1. The Greater New York Councils do not know the amount of the increase at this time.  Please know that National BSA is considering this change out of necessity, and they are committed to ensuring that all youth will be able to experience the character-building benefits of Scouting regardless of their financial situation. While most families understand the need for annual cost increases, we recognize the timing creates challenges.
National BSA has committed to providing the new registration fee by the end of October, which would take effect on January 1.
We commit to providing additional information as it becomes available to us. As a means to keep costs to our Scouting families to a minimum, please feel free to reach out to your District Professional for unit fundraising support and ideas. On behalf of the Greater New York Councils, Boy Scouts of America, thank you for your leadership in Scouting.
Yours in Scouting,
Ethan V. DraddyScout Executive  Joseph SchiltzDirector of Field Service
