TROOP 106- Summer Camp Reminder- Action Needed

Greetings,

We would like to share with you the details of Troop 106’s planned outing for Saturday August 12, 2023.  This will be the Saturday between the troop’s first and second week at summer camp.  Those scouts attending camp for both weeks should plan on participating unless they are being picked up by their parents for the day.  There is no option to remain in camp while the rest of the troop is out.  Those attending summer camp for only one week are welcomed to either stay one extra day through Saturday 08/12/2023, or to arrive one day early, in order to participate.  The cost for the day’s activities will be $25.00 per person.  Scout’s parents and siblings are welcomed to join us as well.

The troop will depart camp at 10:00 AM on Saturday August 12th and proceed to the Steamtown National Historic Site & the adjacent Electric City Trolley Museum.  These are located in Scranton, PA a little over an hour from Ten Mile River.

Steamtown National Historic Site (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov)

Lackawanna Trolley Museum – Electric City Trolley Museum (trolleymuseumnepa.com)

Scouts will spend the afternoon touring the exhibits at both sites.  The visit to the trolley museum will include a 1 hour ride on an historic restored trolley.   All participants will be provided with a bag lunch and beverages will be available throughout the afternoon.  Before we depart Steamtown, all participants will be provided a tailgate style dinner.

We will then proceed to PNC Field in Moosic, PA where we will watch the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Railriders host the Syracuse Mets at 6:05 PM.  The Railriders are a Triple-A affiliate of the NY Yankees.  Following the game, scouts will be permitted a brief stop at Walmart to pick up any necessities.  We expect to be back in camp by 11:00 PM.  Note that cash is not accepted for any purchases at PNC Field.

In consideration of the fact that group tickets for both the ballgame and the trolley ride will need to be reserved and purchased in advance, payment to the troop for all participants must be made no later than Tuesday May 23rd!

Cash or checks will be accepted at the Troop meetings. Please reach out with any questions or concerns.

As I mentioned in my previous email, we have a busy spring coming up with three Eagle Scout Service Projects correctly scheduled and two more on the way.

If you have not signed-up for camp it’s not too late or if you need to apply for a campership, money is still available.

Please see below the information about Eagle Camp,

Scouts attending camp during Week 6 will have the opportunity to earn some merit badges not typically offered at summer camp.  This is due to Eagle Camp taking place at Camp Aquehonga during Week 6.  The following Eagle required  merit badges are expected to be offered in the morning:

Citizenship in the Community

Citizenship in the Nation

Citizenship in the World

Communication

Family Life

Personal Management

Emergency Preparedness is expected to be offered in the afternoon.

Counselors for some of these badges will also be attending camp with Troop 106 both Week 5 and Week 6.

Scouts wishing to work on any of these badges are advised to look up the requirements on www.scouting.org.  From there, click on: Skills, click on: Merit Badges and then click on: All Badges.  Finally, click on the specific merit badge of interest.  (Requirements can be printed out from this site)

Please be reminded that all merit badges require Scoutmaster approval before a scout can begin work with a counselor.   Please be advised that many of the badges listed above will require the scouts to complete some requirements before arriving at camp or, those requirements will need to be completed following camp.

Please advise Scoutmaster Anthony Zalak as well as Jim Mckay if you plan to work on any of these badges while at camp Week 6.  Jim McKay has been asked to inform the Eagle Camp staff of which badges scouts from Troop 106 plan to work on.

Also, if you have any equipment that you want engraved, please bring it down tomorrow night as Jim McKay will have his engraving machine at the meeting.

Lastly, their will be a Committee Meeting tomorrow night so if any scout needs a a board of review, please let me know.

Thanks and as always, please reach out to me with any questions or concerns.
